It is the hardest and deepest station of Baku Metro in terms of geological conditions. From here, the trains only move to “Jafar Jabbarli” station. According to the conceptual development scheme, as a result of the completion of the Green Line the station will be connected to the beginning of the Green Line, the "Nizami-Darnagul" area, in the future.
The station, named after the prominent Azerbaijani statesman, the great commander, the founder of the Safavid state Shah Ismail Khatai, was named after Stepan Shaumyan, one of the leaders of the 26 Baku Commissars during the Soviet period. It was located in Garashahar district of Baku, where the most important oil refining and other industrial enterprises were concentrated. Currently, the "White City" project is being implemented here and the area is becoming one of the most modern residential and commercial centers in the capital.
The facade of the two-storey building, which is decorated with networks enriched with architectural elements of the station with one entrance and exit, was decorated with the "M" logo. The lobby was built of limestone (travertine), and not of white stone like other similar stations in the post-Soviet era. This limestone is well polished and at the same time more durable. This solid milk-colored stone that turns brown, also pleases eyes with its beauty.
The station pylons were reminiscent of heavy stones. Covered in white and pink marbles, the pylon walls at approximately one-meter height were covered with black stripes. The entrance to the hall was a soffit element with a national pattern, and the floor was dark red. By creating a harmonious view with the ceiling lighting, the polished granite coating of the floor deepens and expands the middle hall.
The operation of the station, which was closed for reconstruction in the 1980s, was frozen during the difficult political and economic times of the early 1990s. As a result, the station was commissioned as a one-way area, and only one-way movement was organized from here.
At the station large-scale repairs were completed in 2008, while another line of “Jafar Jabbarli” station was put into operation and movement was opened along the “Jafar Jabbarli-Khatai” route. This significantly reduced the movement interval between the two stations.
Only after the "28 May-Jafar Jabbarly" passageway stations are fully functional and the Green and Red lines are separated; the station will begin to operate more effectively with the transport infrastructure principles of the Metro.
In 2014, under the order of the Chairman of the Baku Metro CJSC, a large-scale phased reconstruction was started on this route. At the first stage, major repairs and reconstruction works were started in the middle hall of the platform, the station road and the corresponding tunnel of "Khatai-Jafar Jabbarli" route. Although there were no restrictions on the use of the station during this period, the replacement of the expired escalators with new ones at the next stage of the works required the temporary closure of the station with only one entry and exit. The station, which was closed on September 27, 2018, was commissioned on September 12, 2019 with the participation of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
Three “LT-2” escalators were dismantled, and four new Victoria Tube escalators manufactured by German company Thyssen Krupp were installed at the station. For this purpose, the sloping road chamber has been adapted to the technical installation requirements of the four escalators, increasing the safety of passengers, the possibility of evacuation and convenience, as well as the level of service.
Necessary measures have been taken to overhaul the escalator's machine room and install new equipment. Along the sloping road, the tunnel's cast iron was cleaned of corrosion, measures taken to prevent leaks, and high-quality paints used to extend the lifetime and protect the structure from corrosion. Also, the upper and lower parts and reinforced concrete structures of the sloping road were inspected, appropriate measures were taken and strengthened, and floodplains were restored, leaks in the sloping road chamber were fixed, and the umbrella cover of the sloping road was renewed. The new umbrella, made of a special durable material, complements the aesthetic appearance of the escalators with a lighting system. In order to service the escalators, new stairs have been installed on the sidewalks along the sloping road from the engine room. Taking into account the arduous geological environment of the area where the station is located, special attention was paid to the use of reliable and durable materials during the repair.
The new escalators are distinguished by their functionality, with their speed meeting the requirements of world standards. They are economical, efficient, easier to operate and maintain, and allow for automated management.
The walls of the two-storey upper vestibule building, which is losing its stability, have the quality of their sawn stone partially lost, so they have been fortified with reinforced concrete shingles and covered with a metal structure. The natural polished travertine made in Nakhchivan was used during the lining works, ensuring the preservation of the architectural style and originality of the station, as well as its suitability for the geological environment and atmospheric influences.
The umbrella ceiling at the entrance was redesigned at the “Bakimetrolayihe” Institute and reconstructed using modern construction achievements following the recommendations of the Scientific Research and Design Institute of Building Materials named after S.ADadashov. High-quality, durable and long-lasting materials were used in the construction of the metal structure of the new umbrella ceiling. The new umbrella ceiling has been adapted to the aesthetic and architectural appearance of the station. At the entrance to the station, the metal grids, which are made in the form of national architectural elements, were cleaned of corrosion, painted with a special paint and installed back in their place.
One of the important issues was the restoration of artistic and architectural compositions dedicated to Shah Ismail Khatai and his work on the walls of the entrance vestibule and the middle hall of the platform. The non-compliance of the quality of the materials selected during the installation with the aggressive effects of the atmosphere made the architectural designs dangerous. Maximum restoration of the artistic and architectural composition has been achieved with the involvement of leading specialists in this field. The compositions have acquired a fresher look with the richness of national architectural elements and light effects.
The walls of the vestibule are coated with natural travertine and the floor with natural granite. Also, the stretch ceiling, modern lighting system, especially the round-shaped chandelier installed in the dome and the national pattern of ornament made the overall appearance of the vestibule brighter and more noticeable.
At the platform level, German-made 3D wall panels and galvanized ceilings were used. The floor and bottom of the walls are paved with natural granite in accordance with the requirements of metro construction technology. Thus, Khatai station has become one of the most unique and modern stations of the Baku metro.
During the repair period, 899 cubic meters of monolithic reinforced concrete, 47 cubic meters of precast concrete, 90 tons of reinforcement, 113 square meters of masonry, 637 square meters of plaster, 3545 square meters of insulation, 5259 square meters of painting, 4980 square meters of facing, 666 square meters of plasterboard and suspended ceilings were utilized.
Major works started in 2014 on the platform, sub-platform area, station road and road apartments have been completed. The tunnel wear was re-inspected, and all reinforced concrete structures were reinforced or rebuilt. Mortar works were carried out, spills prevented, cast iron tubing painted with a special anti-corrosion paint. A cover made of a special material was installed to prevent the negative impact of spills on the station road and the platform's umbrella. The sub-platform area has been completely reconstructed and adapted to the requirements of modern operation, technical standards and service sectors.
For the first time in the history of the Baku Metro, the station road was built of the most modern reinforced concrete blocks. For this purpose, the old roadbed was demolished and redesigned for the installation of reinforced concrete blocks. A total of 162 cubic meters of concrete was poured on the 149-meter-long station road.
The new road infrastructure, a product of the Baku Metro's own production area, serves to simplify operating conditions and reduce costs, facilitate maintenance and improve service quality. The new blocks are more durable, efficient and high quality than wooden sleepers.
All communication lines and equipment at the station have been updated. The centralization station and station attendant's rooms, which are important in organizing, managing and regulating traffic, have been reconstructed, and the control kiosk of escalators has been provided with video footage. A new video surveillance network has been established, information systems and passenger automation equipment have been installed.
The main and local water supply facilities located at the station and in the road section, as well as their control cabinets have been reconstructed in accordance with the requirements of modern times and the level of technological development. The wastewater disposal system has been fundamentally changed and updated. In this regard, the devices, pumps and new types of closed tanks guarantee a modern and, most importantly, the highest level of environmental friendliness.
The water junction has been completely reconstructed, with drinking and fire water lines separated.
The local ventilation system of the station has been reconstructed in accordance with modern requirements and with the application of technological innovations. The renovated technical and service rooms have been overhauled and provided with a centralized air conditioning system.
The station is equipped with fire protection systems, and the latest innovations have been applied in this regard. The new fire alarm system does not require constant maintenance and is resistant to long-term operation without exposure to complex atmospheric influences. As the sensitivity range is wide, it has an information system to take preventive measures. Taking into account all the advantages, the quality of fire safety has been significantly increased through the new system to the highest standards.
Reconstruction measures have been carried out along the “Khatai-Jafar Jabbarli” road. As there is no natural ventilation of the piston effect caused by the intensive movement of trains, additional measures were taken, and a ventilation pipe was laid in the connecting tunnel to increase the ventilation capacity. Reinforcement measures were carried out in the connecting tunnel, substation and road crossing tunnels with concrete solutions resistant to geological impacts. The metal insulation and tunnel jacket were reinforced with a monolithic reinforced concrete structure, additional protective measures were taken, and the back of the tunnel jacket was filled with concrete mortar.
In accordance with the norms and rules of construction, 266 cubic meters of B15, 8 cubic meters of B25, 20 cubic meters of B35, 227 cubic meters of B40 concrete mortar, 57 tons of reinforcement and 1.9 tons of metal were used in the tunnels.
The area around the station has been landscaped, a lighting system installed to complete the overall ensemble of the station complex, and greenery planted. In order to protect the station from rain, to divert streams, to collect water and to strengthen the protection from the effects of precipitation, a slope was installed, and other relevant measures were taken.
